GIBSON L. SMITH, SR.—VISIONARY LEADER
For 24 years, Gibson Smith traveled throughout the Southeast managing and leasing real estate for Belk Stores. In 1964, at age 50, Smith decided to form his own real estate firm in Charlotte. The Charlotte Observer reported that his resignation was “accepted reluctantly” by department store magnate, John Belk.
Smith served as President of Gibson Smith Realty until 1982. When he retired, he sold his company to a group of his key, long-term associates. Today the company is led by three partners who are committed to Smith’s founding philosophy—absolute integrity combined with the highest standards of professionalism.
